when the Lawfirm is the oppressor who do we turn to
it was 2005 when i enlisted the services of Law firm X to pursue x-tenant who had abandoned my property withoud paying. x-tenant was persued across provinces and eventually located and charged accordingly. Law firm sent me invoices of charges to pay etc and i complied. x-tenant now has a garnishee order which pays me a small amount per month. it is June 2010. i receive a letter from Law firm X which instructs me to pay X amount immediately or i will be summonsed withoud further notice. i receive it on 14th June and inside it is dated sometime in May. i cant respond cos i am outside RSA from 14/06 till 01/07/2010 i go to post office again on 8th July and i receive another letter also dated in May which claims i must pay R3245.95 by the 18th of June. it lists invoices from far back as 2007. QUESTION: i was never informed of these invoices and to my knowledge promptly paid invoices when they came. so i dont understand how a reputable lawfirm can not inform me of such monies then wham bam in 2010 expect me to pay the total sum when they never communicated it in the first place. isnt there a procedure or legal requirement that necessitates them to inform me if i owe them and a procedural way of doing this? they did not inform me of any further fees due to them. i feel violated and believe they are abusing their powers to threaten me. i am a single lady with no financial muscle to sue a big firm like this. any advice?
